Jet Motor - Not really part of rocketry

I played around a bit with some jet motors I built.Imagine a G class motor running for a minute, that you can control the thrust, with a blue flame blowing from the exhaust.Don't even ask about the video when the motor fired perfectly.... Cry

Awesome, looks like you know what you are doing there Smiley
A turbo and a line input, is it gas? Huh
For what are you going to use it, for your Nissan bakkie like extra speed? Grin :
Please one video clip Smiley

Re: Jet Motor - Not really part of rocketry

Okay this will be a long post. Roll Eyes

I'm going to cry while I write this! Cry

The combustion chamber you see in the picture is very very large. I made it alot smaller, 3/4 was cut away.It uses propane gas.The propane injector was mounted at the back.I later on made the air intake also com through into the back of the chamber, This increases flame stability inside the chamber.

I'll post a pic of the finished motor assembly. I had to create some sort of a injection jet with holes to keep the combustion flame running at low pressure. To be honest I didn't think it would work.I didnt use oil and water pumps for the turbo.Just gave it enough oil to run.

At first a spinned the turbo up with a compressor then lit the propane gas inside.Sometimes the combustion would happen to fast and you would just here a loud poof!..and the dump valve whistling away...Sometimes when you spin the turbo really slow and ignite the gas inside you can hear and feel the flame inside burning, but not enough to be self sustaining. At first I thought the wasn't enough propane entering the chamber to speed up the turbo...

After about a week of testing I decided to spin the turbo slowly until I could here the flame inside and feel the chamber heating up.(this was achievable after the jetting etc..). I thought srew it and spinned the turbo up so fast it sounded like a real jet starting up.The loud whistle, you almost become deaf.I did this alot for fun just because it sounded cool! Grin .But without fuel or ignition.

As I did this with the fuel and ignition inside the chamber I heard a faint blowing sound coming from the turbo. As I turned off the compressor I could clearly here the motor was running. We(me and my friend) could hear a loud whistle with some sort of blowing sound. The motor started to heat up within seconds and then it really started. The whistle went away and it sounded like a rocket lifting off!We stepped away from the motor that was now blowing a 20cm blue flame out of the turbo exhaust.I ducked and dived and turned off the propane to stop this beast motor!! Tongue Shocked

Me and my friend wanted a video of this!!!So after a bit of cooling down, we did exactly the same and the motor started again. It really sound like a jet fighter taking off.I cranked the propane gas to full throttle. It blew away all the ground behind it with a blue flame and started bouncing around on the table. I turned to off before it exploded Grin.

NOW ITS TIME TO CHECK THIS VIDEO OUT!The video? There was no video! In the all the flames and thrust and heat etc.. my friend accidently pressed the record button twice!!Catching nothing but the ground!!!! Cry Cry Cry Cry Cry Cry Angry

Anyway We could just do it again right?Wrong...the heat and massively high rpm generated by the previous 2 attempts fried the turbo and I had to clean the bushes to make it run smooth again.I have a huge other turbo I'm working on that I have stripped. Here comes the worst part. The turbo that I already stripped had a normal thread on the main rod.So this one should also have a nomral thread.A half a turn with the ratchet and klink....the rode broke off... Angry Angry Angry. It was reverse threaded!! Cry WHY?! The only motor I have ever made that works so great was now lost... Cry

Next time I will definitely add a oil pump and cooler with a water pump and radiator.

Okay nou is ek gatvol geskryf en somer depressed! Grin Cheesy Wink
